Tlacopan, Mexico. In 1431, the Aztecs forged an alliance with this northern kingdom and Texcoco to the east. The Triple Alliance defeated the eastern kingdoms of Tlaxcala and Huejotzingo, making the Aztecs the dominant rulers of central Mexico.
Texcoco, Mexico. This junior member of the Triple Alliance of 1431, with the Aztecs and Tlacopan to the west, benefited from Aztec dominance in the region. But it was also one of the first kingdoms to feel the wrath of Cortez and his anti-Aztec allies, as the Spanish conquistador made his scorched-earth march toward Tenochtitlan in 1520.
Tenochtitlan, Mexico. The Aztecs founded their capital city on an island in Lake Texacoco after seeing an eagle perched on a cactus. Today, the Venice-like city of canals, grand plazas, and temples is hidden by the modern construction of Mexico City, one of the world's largest settlements.
To their neighbors, they were fierce and annoying nomads who called themselves the Mexica. For hundreds of years, they were pushed from settlement to settlement, their aggressive behavior too rude for several hosts to stand. But today, we know the Mexica as the Aztecs, the fierce people highlighted in the fourth episode of SPIRITS OF THE JAGUAR, who came to rule much of what we now call Mexico.
The Aztecs believed they were born in the bowels of the earth and entered the world through seven caves. At first, they settled in Aztlan, a still undiscovered city that archaeologists believe was somewhere along Mexico's northwest coast. About 1100, however, the Aztecs left Aztlan and headed south, settling for short periods in various cities ruled by their neighbors. By the 1300s, they had reached the marshy shores of Lake Texacoco in the broad Valley of Mexico. They found the best land already occupied by more powerful immigrants who had arrived earlier. So they settled for an empty island in the middle of the lake, serving as mercenaries for more powerful tribes for more than 50 years and learning how to coax food from the wet soils.

Latin American Revolutions
Latin American Revolutions: Crash Course World History #31
Published on Aug 23, 2012
In which John Green talks about the many revolutions of Latin America in the 19th century. At the beginning of the 1800s, Latin America was firmly under the control of Spain and Portugal. The revolutionary zeal that had recently created the United States and had taken off Louis XVI's head in France arrived in South America, and a racially diverse group of people who felt more South American than European took over. John covers the soft revolution of Brazil, in which Prince Pedro boldly seized power from his father, but promised to give it back if King João ever returned to Brazil. He also covers the decidedly more violent revolutions in Mexico, Venezuela, and Argentina. Watch the video to see Simón Bolívar's dream of a United South America crushed, even as he manages to liberate a bunch of countries and get two currencies and about a thousand schools and parks named after him.

George H.W. Bush gets hospital visit from son: 'Big morale boost'
Posted by Eun Kyung Kim on April 21
Former President George H.W. Bush received a special hospital visit from a familiar face, his son, who gave a promising update about his dad.
"Pleased to report that 41 is joyful, strong, and ready to come home soon," former President George W. Bush wrote in an Instagram post of their bonding session.
Bush's father has been recovering at a hospital since last Friday, when he was admitted for pneumonia.
The elder Bush, 92, also posted the same photo in a tweet that described his joy over the visit.
"Big morale boost from a high level delegation. No father has ever been more blessed, or prouder," he wrote.
Bush's hospitalization is the second time this year that the former president has been hospitalized for pneumonia. A previous battle also required medical attention in January.
But Bush was released in time to be the honorary coin-flipper at this year's Super Bowl in Houston.
Earlier this month, Bush was paid a visit at his Houston home by yet another former president, his White House successor Bill Clinton.

War and Nation Building in Latin America: Crash Course World History 225
Published on Feb 11, 2015
In which John Green teaches you about nation building and nationalism in Latin America. Sometimes, the nations of Latin America get compared to the nations of Europe, and are found wanting. This is kind of a silly comparison. The rise of democratic, economically powerful nations in Europe came about under a very different set of circumstances than the way nations arose in Latin America, so the regions are necessarily a lot different. But why? John will explore whether it was a lack of international war which impeded Latin America's growth, which sounds like a crazy thing to say, but you should hear him out.

It isn't a mammoth but an Ice Warrior, who has been lying dormant for 5000 years. He identifies himself as Grand Marshal Skaldak but when he cannot contact others of his kind, he assumes he is the last of his race. The 21 Biggest Misconceptions about World War Two

By John Kuroski on February 13, 2017
http://all-that-is-interesting.com/world-war-ii-myths#1
So ingrained is the widely accepted narrative of World War II that we can recount the conflict's history in a short series of mere phrases: Hitler rises, France falls, the Holocaust begins, Pearl Harbor burns, D-Day commences, the bomb drops.
However, this narrative -- even in its most fully fleshed-out form -- misrepresents why and when the war started, how and where it progressed along the way, and why and when it ended. This narrative likewise conceals both the greatest devastation committed by the war's "villains" and the greatest triumphs achieved by its "heroes."
Did you know, for example, that the war didn't begin in 1939 and didn't end because of the bomb? Did you know that Hiroshima and Nagasaki weren't even the deadliest bombings of the war, that 400,000 Axis soldiers made it onto American shores, or that the body count of the Holocaust is about twice as big as you think it is?
The facts and photos above begin to reveal the story of the war as it actually happened, not the narrative propagated by its most powerful victors after the fact. These are 21 World War II myths that desperately needed to be debunked.

The Sui Dynasty -
The Sui Dynasty - A Violent Reunification
Published on Dec 14, 2012
There seems to be a lot of repetition in Chinese history. The short-lived Qin Dynasty violently united the empire and led to the Han—China's first Golden Age.
And in a similar way the Sui Dynasty, which lasted just 36 years, re-united China after almost 400 years of division, setting the stage for the Tang—the greatest of China's dynasties.
The Sui Dynasty was established in 581 AD. China had been divided since the end of the Han Dynasty in around 220 AD. After passing through the battles of the Three Kingdoms Period and the Northern and Southern Dynasties, the rulers of the Northern Wei Dynasty saw their chance to conquer "all under heaven," the Chinese term for the area considered as China at the time.
Due to multiple palace coups, the rulers of Wei ended up with the surname Sui. They conquered Sichuan in 533 AD, the North East in 577, and then set their sights on the south. The Southern campaign involved a massive naval assault with thousands of ships sailing up the Yangtze River.
