Even when a sense of nationalism might have not been consolidated among the Haitian general population it is highly unlikely that it was not a least incipient to say the least among the elite ranks. I truly find hard to believe Toussaint's primary objective was to gain acknowledgement and recognition from France. Also, I did not know he had even tried to protect his former owner as a slave.

Dennis, I don't understand what you are trying to say in your first part of your comment? Can you elaborate a bit more, please? And as to your second half of the comment, I think TL was ultimately thinking about the newly freed colony's future rather than to be acknowledged by France. I assumed, TL wanted to negotiate with the officials of France, knowing the resources his island have and the prosperities that could come about if the two nations were to worked together. But, instead the French did not see it that way, they were disturbed by the idea of a nation run by former black slaves and they wanted to totally destroy and restore slavery back to the island.

Really grateful I have watched this documentary. Haiti has honestly been through a lot... I would love to learn more about it's history although this provided me with much information.
