The Atlantic Slave Trade: Crash Course World History #24

Published on Jul 5, 2012
In which John Green teaches you about one of the least funny subjects in history: slavery. John investigates when and where slavery originated, how it changed over the centuries, and how Europeans and colonists in the Americas arrived at the idea that people could own other people based on skin color.

In all my years learning about Slavery, it has never occurred to me that the goods the slaves were mostly used for were more recreational as opposed to something vital. Thinking about it, thats pretty crazy

Wow, now that I think about it, that is crazy. People were whipped, beaten, and just overall mistreated for so many years for things that slave owners did not even really need. It's always been taught the "trade" or economic aspect of slavery, but at the end of it all, slavery was a means for the perpetuation of self-seeking interests and separation.

The effects of slavery are still visible to in practically EVERY aspect of American society today. From political, social, economics and so much. Even after slavery was abolished there were laws that prohibited blacks to resources. For instance, housing laws prohibited blacks from buying homes in certain neighborhoods. Banks often did not grant loans to black couples.

It's hard to believe that advanced societies like the Ancient Greek and the Romans believed in the importance of slavery. Although they didn't believe it was completely wrong, some philosophers like Seneca thought that slaves should be treated as humans and not animals, I'm honestly surprised he didn't mention his ideas in the video.

Without a shadow of a doubt Slavery is one of the saddest chapters in our corrupted and malleable history. Human lives are the most important thing in life. People are not merchandise, period. I was shocked at Aristotle's conception of slavery. Such a deplorable attitude towards such a central matter for man of his caliber and influence.

Crash Crourse is honestly the greatest thing bestowed to us. One thing that caught my attention when watching this video was the timeline of slavery and when it began. I wasn't aware that slavery technically started with the Greeks. I always thought that slavery started with the African Slave Trade. I also didn't know that the slaves in the Northeastern region of America had "better living conditions" so they could reproduce and their child would eventually work as slaves just like their parents.

The topic of slavery has always caught my attention and I also find it appalling how slaves endured abuse. I also was not aware that slavery began with the Greeks. I enjoyed watching this video.

I think that slavery is one of, if not, the major reason why we have a lot of discrimination. People used to think that those who were slaves were considered less than humans and sometimes I believe that that type of thinking is has been passed down generations

I totally agree with some of the comments above. Slavery for recreational purposes is beyond cruel and inhumane, and I do believe that some of these ideas on slavery were indeed passed down over time until it was finally put to a stop. I really enjoyed this video because it was very informative on aspects that I didn’t know about slavery like the fact that some slaves were powerful, among other aspects like how the Greeks were among the first to have slaves. Lastly, like someone mentions above Aristotle’s idea on slavery totally shocked me.

The idea that slavery actually exists in this world surprises me, knowing that something so terrible is still happening in this world today.

slavery is so sad and I am totally against it. It is sad how people treated other humans like objects or animals
